HUNTINGTON, Mass. - Westfield State field hockey head coach Heather Cabral recently received a Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award from the Grinspoon Foundation, along with Diane Uliana and Lane Meskevich, all teachers in the Gateway Regional School District.

Several members of the Westfield State field hockey team recently assisted students at the Chester (Mass.) Elementary School with an interesting class project - re-stocking the Westfield River with salmon.

Places Third In Steeplechase At NCAA Championships

Junior Kerry Arouca was honored at the Westfield State College trustee
meeting on Thursday, June 11, for earning All-America honors at the
2009 NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships, which were
held at Marietta (Ohio) College. Making the presentation were Westfield
State president Evan S. Dobelle, left, and track and field head coach Sean
O'Brien. Arouca was also recognized for competing in three NCAA
championships during the 2008-2009 academic. The Hanson, Mass., 
resident participated in the national cross country and indoor track
and field championships. She just missed earning All-America honors
in the indoor nationals by placing ninth in the 5,000 meter run.

PITTSFIELD - Originally brought in as a fill-in, Pittsfield native David Glass has made it a Berkshire County trifecta on the Pittsfield American Defenders roster.

Glass, a junior at Westfield State College, came into Wahconah Park to help the Defenders out because they were three pitchers short to start the NECBL season, but has found himself a home in the Defenders bullpen.

"I would say we're beyond just a short look-see and to fill a temporary roster spot," Defenders manager Carroll Land said before Saturday's home opener against New Bedford. "He's got a chance to make this club."

Westfield State College senior basketball standout Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, Mass.) has been selected the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference’s Howard C. Smith Female Scholar-Athlete of the year. 

The prestigious award is presented annually to male and female senior student-athletes who have excelled both academically and athletically while a student of a Massachusetts state college. The award is named in honor of Howard C. Smith, a former state college trustee who was largely responsible for the formation of the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) and the acceptance of intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the state college system. 

To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must have achieved a least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be in his or her last year of athletic eligibility.

ECAC New England All-Stars

Westfield State College sophomore Laura Chiricosta (Lexington) was selected to the ECAC New England Division III All-Star first team.

Playing the attack position, Chiricosta led the Owls - a third-year varsity program - to an 11-5 record. She ranked 15th nationally in scoring with an even 100 points, and was17th nationally with 77 goals.

Meet Results

MARIETTA, Ohio - Westfield State College junior Kerry Arouca (Hanson, Mass.) earned All America honors by placing third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships on Friday, May 22.

Arouca shattered her own school record in the grueling race with a time of 10:31.71. She entered the national championships as the No. 9 seed with a time of 10:44.54.
