Owl Senior Earns Third All-America Honor

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Westfield State’s Kerry Arouca placed second in the 5,000 meter run at the NCAA Division III women’s indoor track and field national championships on Saturday, March 13, at DePauw University.

Arouca earned her third All-America honor with her highest finish ever at the national championships, a time of 17:02.22 in the 5,000 meter run. She finished second to St. Lawrence (N.Y.) College junior Wendy Pavlus, who posted a winning time of 16:59.40. Pavlus also won the NCAA cross country national championship last fall, easily outdistancing the runner-up by 17 seconds.

“I thought Kerry had a good chance to win but she was boxed in numerous times on the inside,” said Westfield State head coach Sean O’Brien.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Westfield State baseball team opened its 2010 season by splitting a double header with UMass Dartmouth on Sunday, March 14. The Owls dropped a tough 6-5 decision in the opener then came back to win the nightcap, 10-2.

TOWSON, MD - Westfield State went on a 5-0 run late in the first half and never looked back, holding off College of Notre Dame by a 14-12 score Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup. Notre Dame drops to 1-2 early in its 2010 campaign while Westfield State improved to 2-1 with the victory.

Westfield State’s Kerry Arouca will be competing in the NCAA Division III women’s indoor track and field national championships this weekend at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

The senior standout from Hanson, Mass., is ranked first in the 5,000 meter run with a conversion time of 17:03.41. Arouca shattered her personal best with a time of 17:00.11 on Boston University banked track at the All New England championships

Despite the No. 1 seed, Arouca’s chief goal is the earn All-America honors by placing in the top eight in the highly competitive field of 5,000 meter runners.
