Senior Andrew Poliferno is the ace of the Owls' 3.0 Club.
The Westfield State baseball team is achieving success on the playing field and in the classroom, as Owl baseball head coach Ray Arra proudly announces that his squad earned an aggregate grade point of 3.08 during the 2009 fall semester.

The team’s cumulative grade point average was 2.95, with 11 of the 29 players making the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll by earning cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Also, 18 players had 3.0s for the fall semester.

The Owls have a veteran team with 19 returning players, including 10 seniors, on its roster. Westfield has won or shared two of the past three MASCAC regular season championships and participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2009.

1.30.2010 | Baseball
Westfield State has finalized its baseball schedule for the 2010 season. The Owls begin play with an 11-game spring break trip in the Winter Haven, Fla., area March 13-20. Ten of the 11 spring break games will be vs. New England colleges, including a season-opening double header vs. Endicott College March 13.

The Owls' home opener is scheduled for March 23 vs. Elms.

Dave Jauss
FLUSHING, N.Y. – The New York Mets recently announced they have completed their 2010 major league coaching staff by naming former Westfield State skipper Dave Jauss as bench coach and Chip Hale third base coach. 

Jauss was the Westfield State baseball head coach for three years (1982-84). He led the Owls to the NCAA Tournament in 1984 and ECAC Tournament berths in 1982 and 1983.

PITTSFIELD - Originally brought in as a fill-in, Pittsfield native David Glass has made it a Berkshire County trifecta on the Pittsfield American Defenders roster.

Glass, a junior at Westfield State College, came into Wahconah Park to help the Defenders out because they were three pitchers short to start the NECBL season, but has found himself a home in the Defenders bullpen.

"I would say we're beyond just a short look-see and to fill a temporary roster spot," Defenders manager Carroll Land said before Saturday's home opener against New Bedford. "He's got a chance to make this club."

MANSFIELD, Conn. - James Wood (Windham, NH) hit a game-tying three-run home run with two out in the bottom of the fourth inning to spark the third-seeded and defending national champion Trinity College baseball team to a 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Westfield State College Wednesday afternoon on the opening day of the 2009 NCAA Division III New England regional tournament at the Eastern Connecticut State Baseball Stadium.

A winner of eight of its last nine, Trinity (30-5) advances in the winners’ bracket Thursday at 7:45 p.m. while Westfield (23-16) will play an elimination game Thursday at 1:35 p.m. vs. Husson College (31-13) of Bangor, Maine. Husson, the No. 7 seed, lost to Southern Maine, 5-4, in 10 innings on Wednesday night. NCAA Regional Team Capsules

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The NCAA Division III Selection Committee has selected theEastern Connecticut Baseball Stadium as the site for the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball New England Regional Tournament, co-hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University and the Little East Conference between May 13 -17. The five-day, double-elimination tournament is just one of the three eight-team sites in the 54-team tournament field. 

If you are unable to make the trip to Mansfield, Conn., you can follow all the action live on the Little East Conference Web site. The tournament championship page will provide full coverage of the New England Region with a link for real-time statistics and video broadcast for each of the games. The Eastern Connecticut sports information staff will be running live in-game statistics, while Bridgewater Television (BTV9) will be producing each broadcast.
