NEFC All-Academic Team
Fourteen members of the Westfield State football squad earned New England Football Conference INEFC) All-Academic honors this season.
To be eilgible for NEFC honors, players must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and been enrolled at their respective college for at least a year.
Greater Gridiron Club Of Boston Player Of The Year

Westfield State's Josh Mathieu receives the Joe Zabilski Award as the New England Division II/III defensive player of the year during the Greater Gridiron Club of Boston's annual college banquet on Jan. 14 in Burlington, Mass. Making the presentation is Gridiron Club member Curt Bletzer. Mathieu led the Owls' highly-ranked defense with a nation-high 22 passes defended (7 interceptions, 15 pass breakups). The senior cornerback was also a d3football.com first-team All-American. Mathieu is the second Westfield player to receive the prestigious Zabilski Award. All-America Teams
Westfield State senior cornerback Josh Mathieu (Fitchburg, Mass.) and junior punter Chris Stengel (Forest Hill, Md.) were selected to the D3football.com 2009 All-America football team.
Mathieu capped an outstanding postseason of prestigious honors as he was named a first team All-American, while Stengel was accorded honorable mention status.

CAPE COD, Mass. - Three Westfield State players - senior defensive back Nick Leverone (Natick, Mass.), senior defensive back Josh Mathieu (Fitchburg, Mass.) and junior Chris Stengel (Forest Hill, Md.) - were selected to the ECAC 2009 Division III Northeast Football All-Stars.

All-East Region Teams
Three Westfield State players - senior cornerback Josh Mathieu (Fitchburg, Mass.), junior punter Chris Stengel (Forest Hill, Md.) and senior defensive end Nick Gniadek (Northbridge, Mass.) - were named to the D3football.com 2009 All-East Region Team.
Mathieu and Stengel were both first-team selections and Gniadek was a second-team choice. There are four All-Region teams in the country and the East region includes New England, New York, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.

New England All-Star Team
Westfield State defensive back Josh Mathieu and punter Chris Stengel were selected to the New England Division II/III sportswriters all-star team.
This is the third straight year that two Owls have been selected to the prestigious squad respresenting the best Divison II and Division III players in New England. Linebacker Jay Fielding was a two-time selection and receivers David Benoit and Scott McIntyre were named to the all-star squad in 2008 and 2007, respectively.

All-Conference Teams
Eight players from Westfield State earned all-conference honors in the New England Football Conference (NEFC).
All eight were first-team selections in the eight-team NEFC Bogan Division. Heading the list is senior cornerback Josh Mathieu (Fitchburg, Mass.), who was selected the NEFC Bogan Division defensive player of the year.
Six of the first-team picks are from the Owls’ nationally-ranked defense: Mathieu, senior defensive back Nick Leverone (Natick, Mass.), senior end Nick Gniadek (Northbridge, Mass.), senior tackle Matt Fall (Wilbraham, Mass.), senior linebacker Matt Denman (Milford, Mass.), and junior punter Chris Stengel (Forest Hills, Md.).

Westfield State sophomore defensive back Ryan O'Connell (Athol, Mass.) was named co-defensive player of the week in the 16-team New England Football Conference.
O'Connell accounted for three turnovers with two interceptions (22 return yards) and a fumble recovery. O'Connell also forced a fumble and made eight tackles, including six solo stops, in Westfield's 33-16 victory at Worcester State.
O'Connell also played a key role in Westfield's Oct. 31 victory over Fitchburg when he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.
