Yelin Scores Game-Winner In Soccer Season Opener

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior midfielder Kyle Yelin (Southwick) scored an early first-half goal to lift Westfield State to a 1-0 victory over local rival Western New England College in the men’s soccer season opener before a large crowd of nearly 600 on Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Yelin took a short pass in the box from senior Phil Cimino and ripped a shot into the net from seven yards out 17:12 into the game.

Preseason Poll

Bridgewater State University is the pre-season pick to win the 2010 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship in a vote of the league’s coaches.

Bridgewater captured five first place votes to amass 60 points in taking the top spot in the poll, as the 2009 regular season champion Bears outdistanced second place Framingham's total of 53 points that included two first place votes. Westfield is next in third place with 50 points.

presented special gift sets, including watches, at the college's fall sports

All Conference Team

Westfield State placed five players on the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) 2009 all-conference squads.

First-team selections were senior midfielder Ben Berthiaume (Swansea) and sophomore forward Tim Parsons (Buzzards Bay) and second-team picks were forward Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn.), sophomore back Sam LaBonte (Westhampton) and senior back Josh Silvia (South Windsor, Conn.).

Berthiaume was also a first-team pick during his sophomore season. He registered five assists this season to rank second for the Owls in that category.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Anna Maria jumped out to 3-1 halftime lead and held on for a 3-2 victory over Westfield State in an ECAC New England Division III men’s soccer tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 11.

Anna Maria boosted its record to 11-8 and advances to the semi-finals, where it will play either No. 1 seed Wentworth or Lesley. Westfield finishes with a 9-9-2 record after starting the season 0-4-1.

Anna Maria led 2-0 six minutes into the game. Joshua Bernardo (Peabody) scored in the third minute and three minutes later Enco Lika (Worcester) scored with an assist from George Markopoulos (Worcester).
