Westfield Hosts MCLA On Tuesday

All of Westfield State's men's and women's home basketball games, and selected away games, can be seen live on the internet via video stream. The link to view the games is www.mascac.tv. Westfield State students Matt LaPan and Bryan Stockhaus are providing the play-by-play and color commentary for the home games.

In addition, in-game statistics for all home games can be viewed on Live Stats.

The Owls continue conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 9, when they host MCLA.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Derek Leab (Shrewsbury) scored a game-high 18 points and freshman center Matt Devine (Pembroke) had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead Westfield State to a 65-55 MASCAC men’s basketball victory over Worcester State on Feb. 2.

The Owls improved to 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the MASCAC; their other MASCAC victory was a 76-56 decision at Worcester State last month. The Lancers are 10-11 and 3-5.

Westfield struggled at the outset, trailing 12-7 with 7:58 left in the first half following a 3-point basket by Maurice Horton. Horton - the MASCAC’s leading scoring (21.5 ppg.) - entered the game needing 16 points for 1,000 career points. However, he was benched for the remainder of the game after being assessed a technical foul for taunting the Westfield bench immediately following his 3-point basket. He played eight minutes and scored five points.

FRAMINGHAM - Senior forward Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, Mass.) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to lead the Framingham State men’s basketball team to a 70-64 win over Westfield State today in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action.

With the win, the Rams even their record at 8-8 overall and improve to 4-2 in the MASCAC, while the Owls fall to 8-10 on the season and 1-4 in conference.

The Rams opened the game on a 16-2 run over the first seven minutes as Westfield State shot just one for their first eight and committed six turnovers over that stretch.

NORTH ADAMS -  The MCLA men's Basketball held on to defeat MASCAC rival Westfield State 75-69 Tuesday night at the Amsler Campus Center. MCLA scored the last 10 points to earn its first MASCAC victory while improving to 7-8 overall.

MCLA opened the game strong scoring the first six points of the contest. Sophomore guard Chris Harris (Dorchester, MA) and junior Jon Greenberg (Antwerp, Belguim) keyed the spurt. The Owls battled back to tie the game early at 7 apiece on a Jesse Benoit layup.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard Nick Linear (Salem) posted game highs of 23 points and seven steals to lead Salem State to a 78-70 victory over Westfield State in MASCAC men’s basketball Saturday, Jan. 16.

Salem’s overall record is only 3-11 but the Vikings improved to 2-0 in the MASCAC. Westfield is 8-8 and 1-2.

Linear’s long-range shooting kept the Vikings in the game in the first half and sparked them in the second half. Linear did not start and only played 21 minutes but he pumped in 5 of 6 attempts from 3-point range.

When he was eight years old, Australian native Gavin Illangakoon - a former Westfield State standout - developed a love for the game of basketball. Today, that love is still strong as he plays professional basketball in Australia and for the past few months, Illangakoon has served as a mentor for the Ellington High School boy’s basketball team.
