AUBURN, N.Y. - Skidmore College edged Westfield State, 2-1, in the NCAA Division III New York Regionals, on Thursday morning, May 17.
Westfield suffered its second straight setback in the seven-team double elimination tournament to finish its season with a 20-17 record. Skidmore, the No. 6 seed, improves to 21-19.
Westfield outhit Skidmore, 8-6, but the Owls stranded nine baserunners.
The Owls were unable to come up with the big hit except for the first inning when Jay Brown delivered an RBI single.
Skidmore scored both of its runs in the third inning with two outs and the bases empty. Two walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a stolen base placed runners at second and third. Greg Carlow then rapped a two-run single thru the left side of the infield.
Steve Sullivan pitched well in relief for Westfield. Sullivan threw four and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs and two hits and striking out three. Steve Burndrett was the losing pitcher.
Adam Franke was 2 for 3 with a double. Brown was 2 for 3.
With a runner at third base and two outs in the ninth inning, Westfield State freshman Ben Wagner rips a shot up the middle. However, the second baseman was able to cleanly field the ball and throw out
Wagner to end the game.
After losing to Ithaca College on Wednesday, 10-0, in a game that finished just before 11:00 p.m. becaiue of a lengthy rain delay, Westfield State played Skidmore College at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
