WESFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Jonathan Joyce placed first individually to lead Westfield State to a third-place team finish at the 14th Annual James Earley men’s cross country invitational at Stanley Park on Saturday, Oct. 10.
Joyce toured the 8,000 meter course in 26:22.05, pulling away from Eastern Connecticut State’s Dave Hunt (26:28.38) in the final mile.
There were 253 runners and 23 men’s teams participating in the popular invitational. UMass Dartmouth placed first with 72 points, followed by Trinity (96) and Westfield (103).
Westfield’s other top runners were sophomore Pat Regan of Wilbraham (10th place), freshman John Dacey (15th) and freshman Anthony Frissora (26th).
“I was pleased with our effort today despite the muddy conditions,” said Westfield coach Bill Devine. “Jon Joyce, in particular, ran well. Placing first in this meet is quite an accomplishment.”
Westfield is idle until Oct. 24 when it hosts the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) cross country championships at Stanley Park.
