WESTFIELD – Southern Maine jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and held on for a 4-3 victory over Westfield State in a wild and wet Little East Conference field hockey game on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Southern Maine improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Westfield is 5-5 and 2-3.

It was a tale of two halves. Southern Maine out-shot Westfield, 12-2, in the first half in taking its commanding lead. Four players scored for the Huskies: Jocelyn Lahey, India Lowe, Caitlin Albert and Kailey Bubier. Lowe assisted on Babier’s goal, which came with 1:11 left in the first stanza.

Westfield erupted for three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to slice the Southern Maine lead to 4-3 with 20:40 left in regulation.

Jessica Donovan scored an unassisted goal and Kate Moss scored with an assist from Jessi Gould. Kasey Bascetta scored the Owls’ final goal off a penalty corner with Alicia Gardner recording her eighth assist of the season.

Westfield, which out-shot Southern Maine, 11-6, in the second half, had very few scoring chances in the final 20 minutes as the Huskies maintained an aggressive offensive attack. Southern Maine had nine penalty corners, including seven in the second, while Westfield finished with two.

Gould did have a good shot on net in the closing minutes but Southern Maine goalie Allison Hill made a nice save.
