WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior Peggy Wefald scored seven goals to lead Mount Holyoke College to a 16-8 victory over Westfield State in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday, March 12.
Mount Holyoke improves its record to 2-1; Westfield is 1-1.
Westfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening seven minutes, forcing Mount Holyoke to call a timeout. The Lyons regrouped to scored seven unanswered goals, including four by Wefald.
The Owls closed to within two, 7-5, at halftime. Leading 8-6 with 26:36 left in the second half, Mount Holyoke went on another scoring spurt, tallying seven more unanswered goals for a commanding 15-6 lead with 11:57 remaining.
Wefald tallied three more goals during the second scoring run and sophomore Clara Raugei scored two of her three goals.
Hilary Bombard of Northampton was the Lyons’ other multiple scorer with two goals, while Maria Young and Ava Gottschall (Amherst) each had a goal and two assists.
Sophomore Rachel Dionne of Feeding Hills (Agawam) led the Owls with three goals and two assists. Laura Chiricosta scored twice.
Mount Holyoke outshot Westfield, 39-10. Mount Holyoke goalie Missy Hartley had no saves, while Westfield goalie Kaity Burns was credited with seven saves.
