Westfield State College junior outfielder Kevin Lyons (Braintree) was named the player of the week and junior pitcher Jesse Vermeersch (Marlboro) was selected pitcher of the week for their stellar play during the MASCAC postseason baseball tournament.
The Owls clinched their second NCAA Tournament berth in three years with a nail-biting 4-3 victory over Worcester State in the championship game. The NCAA regional tournament play begins on May 13; the pairings will be announced next Monday, May 11.
Lyons batted .450 (9-20) with a pair of doubles, two homers, three runs scored and seven RBI. He rapped three hits and drove in four runs in a 10-4 semifinal victory over Bridgewater State, and collected four hits and two RBI in championship round contests vs. Worcester State.
Vermeersch tossed a complete game 142-pitch effort for the Owls in their key semifinal victory over Bridgewater State. Vermeesch also won pitcher of the week honors as a freshman when the hurled a compete game for Westfield in its win over Salem State in the 2007 MASCAC championship game.
