WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State ice hockey team featured another balanced scoring attack and goalie Ray Monroe recorded 39 saves as the Owls posted a 4-2 non-conference victory over Stonehill College on Thursday, Jan. 21.

Westfield upped its overall record to 9-4-2 heading into Saturday’s big home game vs. conference foe Fitchburg State, which won in overtime, 5-4, at Salem on Thursday. The Owls are in first place in the MASCAC with a 6-0-2 record, followed by Salem (6-2-1) and Fitchburg (6-2-0).

Stonehill, which had not played in 43 days entering Thursday’s game, saw its five-game win streak snapped to even its record at 7-7-1.

Four players scored goals for the Owls and eight different players tallied assists. The Owls opened the scoring at the 11:09 mark of the second period when freshman Lucas Romero wristed a nice shot from point over the right shoulder of highly regarded Stonehill goalie Tyler Jackson, who had allowed only four goals in the previous five games.

Dylan Scanlon scored with 2:11 left in the second period for a 2-0 advantage. The Owls took a 3-0 lead 6:23 the final stanza on Drew LaCombe’s goal.

Stonehill got on the scoreboard less than a minute later on a goal by Andrew Diozzi. Westfield’s Dennis Zak and Stonehill’s Christopher Rogers completed the scoring in the penalty-filled third period.
