WESTFIELD – Melissa Proffitt scored 13 points and Rebecca Goreham had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Fitchburg State to a 67-56 victory over Westfield State in MASCAC women’s basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Fitchburg evened its record at 9-9 and 3-3; Westfield is 7-11 and 1-5.

Fitchburg rallied from first and second-half deficits to claim the conference road victory Westfield jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the game’s opening eight minutes, but Fitchburg regrouped to tie the score at halftime, 30-30.

Westfield again played well at the outset of the second half, taking a 45-37 lead with 13:08 remaining. But the Owls struggled offensively, scoring only 11 points in the game’s final 13 minutes, while the Falcons controlled the offensive glass and inside action.

Fitchburg went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good, 48-45, with 9:01 remaining. The Owls’ comeback effort fell short as they could not stop Fitchburg in the paint.

Other top players for Fitchburg were Molly Maloney (10 points, nine boards) and Kelley Rogers (10 points). The visitors (21-for-28) out-shot the host team (7-for-12) from the foul line.

Ashley Finnegan scored a game-high 18 points for Westfield and added a team-high eight rebounds. Cassy Jouannet scored 10 points.
