CLERMONT, Fla. – Madelaine Tomich hurled a four-hit shutout and Brianna Isaacs and Kim Brennan blasted three-run triples to lead Westfield State to an 8-0, six-inning victory over Bowdoin College on Thursday afternoon, March 18.
It was the first loss for 5-1 Bowdoin while Westfield improved to 4-3 with the big victory.
The hot-hitting Isaacs gave Westfield a 3-0 first-inning lead when she cleared the bases with her triple to the right-center field gap.
The Owls then ended the game via mercy rule with a five-run sixth inning. Brennan made it 6-0 with her three-run triple, a shot down the line that just eluded the right fielder’s glove. Kristyn Carroll followed with an RBI groundout and Allison Allen scored the game-ending run on a passed ball.
Bowdoin had several major scoring threats in the game - runners in scoring position with no outs in three innings - but clutch strikeouts by Tomich and some fine defense kept Bowdoin off the scoreboard.
Tomich walked three and struck out eight in his six-inning complete-game performance.
Isaacs also pounded a double to deep center field, finishing 2 for 3 for another productive day. Alicia Gardner was 2 for 3 in Westfield’s nine-hit attack.
