WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University athletics and University President Dr. Ramon Torrecilha honored more than 270 student-athletes for their academic success in the annual 'Athletic Director's 3.0 Honor Roll' at halftime of last night's men's basketball game.
The Owls recognized student-athletes from the 20 men's and women's varsity sports, plus cheerleaders, and student-athletic trainers, each of whom had compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher after completing the fall 2018 semester. Additionally, over 280 student-athletes achieved a fall 2018 semester GPA of 3.0 or better and 17 of those students achieved a perfect 4.0.
"This is one of my favorite evenings of the year, when we honor our student athletes for their academic success," expressed Athletic Director Richard Lenfest.
Many faculty and administrators joined in recognizing the honorees, including Dr. Jen Hanselman, Dean of the College of Mathematics and Sciences; Dr. Enrique Morales-Diaz, Dean of Faculty; Dr. Kelly Hart, Director of Admissions; Susan LaMontagne, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs; Dr. Paul Cacolice, Faculty Athletics Representative; and Dr. Carlton Pickron, retiring Vice President of Student-Affairs.
"You hear it takes a village to raise a child," said Lenfest, "[and] at the university I want to be able to thank our coaches, our faculty, and our administration for all the support they give our student-athletes."
President Torrecilha also gave some brief remarks and congratulated the group on their success.
"An organization is only as good as its members, and collectively the athletics program at Westfield State should be so proud of these accomplishments," he remarked.
After the halftime ceremony, the student-athletes and honored guests enjoyed pizza and other snacks and the honorees received their 3.0 Honor Roll t-shirts as a gift that recognized their accomplishments.
