Westfield State University athletics mourns the passing of alumnus Bob Heyner '81.
A standout hockey player as an undergraduate, Heyner still ranks eighth on the Owls all-time scoring list for goals, and 12th in points, with 55 goals and 56 assists for 111 points, and ranked among the school's single season leaders with 19 goals in the 1980 campaign. He also served as captain of the 1981 Owls' team.
As an alumnus, Heyner was a key organizer among the "Blueliners," the group which helped fundraise to reinstate varsity men's ice hockey at Westfield after state budget cuts forced the program into what became a 20-year hiatus. Heyner helped organize several golf tournaments and to motivate other teammates and donors to join a $100,000 fundraising campaign which ultimately succeeded as Owls hockey returned to the varsity level in 2008.
Bob was a member of Westfield's 1978 ECAC championship team, and returned to campus with that group to be honored at a game in 2018.
