Westfield, Mass. – Westfield State first-year safety Andrew Lovell (Barnstable, Mass.) has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference rookie of the week for his performance in the Owls' game at Vermont State-Castleton last Saturday.
Lovell played a key role in the turnover game, recording an interception and recovering a pair of fumbles in the Owls' 24-10 setback to Castleton. He stopped one Spartan drive with an interception at his own four-yard line, then recovered a fumble in the end zone which was forced at the goal line to thwart another scoring drive. (The fumble was forced by a combined hit from his brother, Eric Lovell, and Owls LB Budder Ferriera). Andrew's other fumble recovery came at the Castleton 4-yard line and set the Owls up for a game-tying field goal before the halftime.
Lovell finished the game with one tackle, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
For the season Lovell ranks seventh on the team in tackles with 16, and shares the team lead with two interceptions.
Westfield State has a 2-3 overall record and a 2-2 record in the MASCAC. The Owls have their bye weekend this Saturday, Oct. 12, before returning to play their homecoming game against Framingham State on Saturday, October 19 with a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Alumni Field.
