Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Members - 2013-14
The purpose of the Student-Athlete Advisory SAAC is to enhance the student-athlete experience. SAAC members have a crucial voice in the department and are encouraged to participate in decisions regarding team equity, spirit, opportunities for athletes, awards programs and student-athlete image.
At WSU, SAAC serves as the campus link to the Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which in turn, communicates with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Westfield State is fortunate to have junior field hockey player Kelsey Carpenter, as a member of the NCAA SAAC until 2016.
The responsibilities of SAAC as a board fall into four areas: 1) Community Service; 2) Educational efforts; 3) Social activities, 4) Student-Athlete voice.
•SAAC is in its third year of sponsoring a Special Olympics flag football tournament and cheerleading event. Over 75 Student-athletes volunteer annually for this very important event and assist with the relationship with Special Olympics.
SAAC members donate over $500 annually to purchase Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children in Westfield.
• WSU SAAC members also serve on the MASCAC SAAC. This group alternates years with a state-wide community service project or an educational session.
SAAC members assist local community organizations such as the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and the Red Cross as needed.
SAAC members recommend areas that need addressed with speakers. SAAC members also ensure team attendance at programs such as study hall, nutrition programs, weight training programs, CHOICES programs and leadership workshops.
SAAC members plan and coordinate the annual pep rally, midnight madness, awards banquet, and NCAA Division III Week held annually in April.
One SAAC member serves as a representative on the WSU Student Government Association. SAAC members meet regularly with athletic administrators.
