Ferreira Named MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week
Ferreira blocked a punt in the end zone and recovered it for a touchdown and added eight tackles and 1.5 sacks as part of a 31-22 win over Worcester State.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior linebacker Budder Ferreira (Haverhill, Mass. / Whittier Voc. Tech.) earned conference honors this past week as he was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after captaining a dominant defensive effort from the Owls this past Saturday.
Ferreira led the Owls with eight tackles and finished with 1.5 sacks and three tackles for loss for a total of 30 yards on the defensive side. On special teams, he made one of the biggest plays of the game, blocking a punt with Worcester pinned in their own end zone, falling on the recovery for a touchdown to give Westfield a two-possession lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Ferreira and the Owls defense stifled the Lancers offense throughout the game, holding them to -43 rushing yards due to constant pressure in the backfield resulting in six sacks as a unit. Westfield held Worcester under 100 total yards for the game for an average of 1.7 yards per play.
On the season, Ferreira has been one of the most productive defenders in the conference as he is tied for second in the MASCAC with 3.5 sacks while his six tackles for loss rank him in the top five. Ferreira's 29 total tackles leads the Owls.
Westfield State (2-2), which has won back-to-back conference games to improve to 2-1 in the league, will remain home this week as the Owls host Anna Maria College for a MASCAC clash on Saturday, October 4 at 12:00 P.M. from Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass.
