Football Closes Season With 10-7 Win at Fitchburg
Tedi Hunt picked off a pass with 11 seconds left to stop a Fitchburg State drive
Westfield State first-year linebacker Tedi Hunt picked off a pass with 11 seconds left to stop a Fitchburg State drive and help the Owls preserve a 10-7 win over the Falcons in the season finale on Saturday in Fitchburg, Mass.
Fitchburg started a drive at their own nine-yard line with just over a minute left in regulation time, and quickly advanced the ball to the Westfield 35, but Hunt picked Falcons QB Rocky Marchitelli on a pass over the middle to seal the win.
The Owls close the season at 3-7 overall, 3-6 in the MASCAC.
On a day where points were hard to come by, Westfield opened the scoring on a 42-yard field goal from Andrew Currier with 29 seconds left in the first half. The 42-yarder tied the school record for longest field goal, set by Mike Orellana in 2013.
Fitchburg got it's lone score of the day on a defensive touchdown, when Jan Valls ran an interception back 27 yards for a TD midway through the third quarter. Westfield responded on their next series with an 8-play, 75 yard drive capped by a 23 yard touchdown run from senior Curtis Dion to gran a 10-7 lead after Currier added the extra point.
Manny Mengata led the Owls attack with 36 carries for 127 yards, helping the Owls dominate time of possession with nearly 39 minutes to 21 for the Falcons.
Senior DL Tommy Bean led the Owls defense with nine tackles and a sack. Westfield sacked Fitchburg QB's six times on the day, with two each from Justyn Gardener and Dylan Zuerblis.
