WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Smith College's Callahan Day scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Bears to a 4-0 win over Westfield State in the championship game of the Caryl Newhof Classic in Northampton, Mass. On Saturday afternoon.
Westfield dips to 1-1 on the season, while Smith is now 2-0 after posting a pair of shutout wins in the tournament.
The Bears led 1-0 after one period on the strength of a Maya Zager goal, and kept that lead into the half. They took a 2-0 lead early in the third quarter, and added a pair of goals in the fourth, with Day factoring in both to secure the win.
Westfield was outshot 25-4 in the match and Smith had a 12-2 edge in penalty corners. Westfield did it's best to withstand the offensive pressure with Emma Gniadek making 20 saves in goal. Westfield's Lee Gould and Eliana Kaplan were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
Westfield will next play at Western New England University on Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m. match.
