Murphy Buries Overtime Winner, Owls Clip Corsairs, 2-1
Murphy scored the golden-goal winner after three critical saves from Olivia Labrie to send the Owls home victorious.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 5:56 into the overtime period as Westfield State defeated UMass Dartmouth 2-1 in a non-conference game from Dartmouth, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
Despite heavily outshooting the Corsairs at a 41-7 mark, the Owls (2-2) were forced to come from behind to reach extra time. After a scoreless first half, in which Corsairs goalie Shane Cueman (Glen Ridge, N.J.) made 11 first-half stops, UMass Dartmouth was first to score just 1:17 into the third.
After an initial save from Olivia Labrie (Southampton, Mass.) on a shot from Ava Lozeau (Mendon, Mass.), Amelia Keeler (Greenfield, Mass.) collected the rebound and tallied the opening goal of the match for either side.
Westfield ramped up the pressure even more after falling behind, battering 16 shots towards the goal, 11 of which were stopped by Cueman. With the Corsairs clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Owls broke through in the final period of regulation as Ashley D'Elia (Watertown, Conn.) tucked the 34th shot of the game past Cueman to even the game at one goal apiece with 5:39 remaining.
Westfield continued their offensive attack to close out regulation, setting up three additional penalty corners while attempting four shots. Shannon Gover (Norwood, Mass.) had two looks at the goal with about a minute remaining, the first stopped by Cueman with the rebound attempt blocked.
In the overtime frame, the Corsairs put immediate pressure on the Owls defense with Labrie making three critical stops to keep the contest alive, setting up Murphy for the eventual overtime winner.
Labrie (W, 2-0) made five saves with three in overtime. Cueman (L, 1-2) piled up 25 saves for the Corsairs to keep her team in the game. On top of the vast shot difference, Westfield racked up 19 penalty corners to UMass Dartmouth's four.
Westfield State will be back in action on Thursday as they welcome Keene State in the home opener at 7:00 P.M. from Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass.
