Westfield State senior goalkeeper Emma Gniadek (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) needed just a pair of saves to post the shutout, as the Owls defeated Framingham State 2-0 in the Owls Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference field hockey opener on Tuesday night at Maple Street Field in Framingham.
Westfield out-shot the Rams 21-8 on the evening.
The Owls netted both goals in the first half. Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) netted the first goal of the game just 2:32 into the contest. Murphy's goal was the 43rd of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth on the Owls all time list with WSU Hall of Famer Heather Cabral '92.
Westfield got an insurance goal in the 22nd minute, with Ashley D'Elia (Watertown, Conn.) scoring off of an assist from Kacey Curran (Fall River, Mass./Durfee).
Westfield improves to 3-3, 1-0 in the league, while Framingham slips to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the MASCAC.
The Owls will next host Worcester State in a conference game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
