Field Hockey Ties Single Season Win Record with 5-1 Victory at Anna Maria
Erin Lane and Kaleigh Murphy both scored twice in the second half to push the Owls to their 11th straight win.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior captains' Erin Lane (Canton, Mass.) and Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) both scored two goals as Westfield State used a strong second half to secure their 11th straight win with a 5-1 road win over Anna Maria on Tuesday night.
Along with extending the program's longest winning streak, the Owls tied the program win record for a single season, recording their 13th victory of the year to tie last year's mark. Westfield also remained unbeaten in the MASCAC, advancing to 9-0. The AMCATS slide to 1-13 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
After a slow start in the first half with the game tied entering the second half, the Owls were able to find the back of the net on four separate occasions while holding Anna Maria to just one shot in the final 45 minutes of action.
Lane broke the tie 1:33 into the third quarter, scoring off an assist from Morgan Beirne (Watertown, Mass.) for a 2-1 lead. Not even two minutes later, the Owls stretched their lead to two goals with Murphy scoring off a feed from Kacey Curran (Fall River, Mass.), who was the Owls goal scorer in the first half.
Murphy and Lane tacked on insurance markers for Westfield in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Murphy's second of the night moved her to eighth on the Owls single-season goals list with 16 goals.
The Owls held a commanding 30-4 shots advantage including a 19-1 edge in the second half. Olivia Labrie (Southampton, Mass.) made three saves to pick up her fifth win of the season. Julianna Stanger was battered with 16 shots on net, making 11 saves. The Owls totaled 16 penalty corners, eight in the third quarter alone, to the AMCATS' two.
Westfield State will now prepare for a showdown on Homecoming weekend against Bridgewater State (8-1 MASCAC) with the top seed in the conference tournament up for grabs. The Owls would clinch the MASCAC regular season title and the number one seed in the MASCAC Tournament with a victory.
