AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College men's basketball scored 101 points for the second game in a row and improved to 3-0 with a 101-72 victory over Westfield State in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Senior Joseph Schneider had a career-high seven blocked shots, four of them in succession during the opening five minutes of the second half. Grant Robinson '21 scored 20 points and handed out four assists. Amherst continued their hot shooting to open the season, hitting 51.3% from the floor and making ten three-pointers.
Amherst shot 58.3% from the floor in the first half and took a 24-16 lead before the Owls (2-2) cut the deficit with a 5-0 run after back to back fast break layups by Peter Mafo, who was one of four Westfield State players in double-figures with ten points.
Marcus Collins had a double-double for the Owls with ten rebounds and thirteen points, along with three blocks. Eric Sellew '20 led Amherst with nine rebounds and saw the court well in the opening half, dishing out four assists while scoring eight points. He finished the game with five dimes, ten points, two blocks and three steals.
The Mammoths finished the first half strong, sparked by a 9-1 run that included a three-pointer by Garrett Day '21 and a pair of layups by Will Phelan '22 and CJ Bachmann '19.
Robinson converted a three-point play on an assist by Josh Chery '20 and a pair of three-pointers from Chery and first year Devonn Allen sent the Mammoths to the break with a 52-35 lead.
The lead increased to thirty points thanks to a 52-38 advantage in points in the paint and a 40-20 edge in bench points, led by the eight-point effort of Bachmann.
Fru Che '21 scored 15 points and had two assists and two steals for the Mammoths, while Chery added 14 points on 5-9 shooting, including 2-3 from long range. Day was 3-3 from distance for an 11-point night.
