Joe Santoro scored the game winning goal 3:00 into overtime to give Post University a 3-2 win over Westfield State in a non-conference ice hockey game at the Shelton Sports Center.
After circling back to regain the puck, Baxter Kimball found Santoro flying down the left side of the ice, and in clean on Owls goaltender Duncan Nichols Delay, Santoro stuffed it in on the short side for the game winner
Westfield is now 2-2 on the season, while Post is 1-3.
Trailing 1-0 early after Santoro's first goal of the game , Westfield tied the game 1-1 when the Owls won a battle for the puck on the half boards, then skated in on Post goalie Benjamin Cunneen with a good give and go between Emile Pichette and Jesper Seeberg, with Pichette finishing with the backhand.
Post grabbed a 2-1 lead midway through the second period, but Westfield responded about a minute later to tie the game 2-2, with Christopher Miraldo centering the puck from the back boards to Pichette in the crease for the tying goal.
Westfield had a bundle of chances in the closing minutes of regulation, perhaps the best when Ryan Moorhouse was stymied by Cunneen on a breakaway 3:19 left. Westfield outshot the Eagles 16-7 in the third period but couldn't get a go-ahead goal.
Duncan Nichols-Delay made 27 saves for Westfield, while Cunneen stood on his head for the Eagles with 33 saves, including stopping a breakaway from Pichette halfway through the overtime to help set up the game winning goal.
Westfield will be at home on Thursday to host Keene State at 7:35 at Amelia Park Arena.
