Hockey Sweeps MASCAC Weeklies
Jesper Seeberg was tabbed as the player of the week, first-year student Xavier Tremblay was the rookie of the week, and first-year goaltender Russ DeCoste picked up goalie of the week honors.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University ice hockey swept the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletics Conference's weekly awards on Monday, winning the player, rookie, and goaltender of the week awards.
The Owls' Jesper Seeberg was tabbed as the player of the week, first-year student Xavier Tremblay was the rookie of the week, and first-year goaltender Russ DeCoste picked up goalie of the week honors.
Seeberg (Lake Worth, Fla. / Islanders HC (USPHL) ) tallied a pair of goals in the Owls 4-2 win over Western Connecticut, getting the scoring started with the first goal of the game in the first period, then netting the game-winner with less than five minutes left in the third.
For the season, the Owls' sophomore winger has totaled six goals and two assists for eight points, and has been on a hot streak with three goals and an assist in the last three games.
Tremblay (Sainte Adele, Quebec / Philadelphia/Huntsmen (EHL) ) tacked on an insurance goal in the closing seconds to assure the Owls win over WestConn. He has five goals and an assist this season, and has tallied a goal in each of the last three games.
DeCoste (Enfield, Nova Scotia/Florida Eels (USPHL)) made his first collegiate start between the pipes on Friday in the 4-2 win over Western Connecticut State University. He delivered with 31 saves for a .939 save percentage.
Westfield State is 8-4 overall this season and 4-1 in MASCAC Conference play. The Owls will host a pair of 'businessman's special's' this week, hosting Keene State on Wednesday and Post University on Friday. Both non-conference games are 1:25 p.m. start times with student athletes free from classes during the semester break.
Fans are encouraged to bring a canned good (or 2!) too help "Fill the Zamboni" as part of Amelia Park Arena's canned food drive to shut out hunger, with donations supporting the Westfield Soup Kitchen and the Food Pantry through Jan. 12.
