WESTFIELD, Mass. – Two quick goals from UMass Dartmouth's Matt Kobrenski (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Daniel Jordan (Needham, Mass.) buried Westfield State in an early 2-0 hole which proved to be the difference as the Corsairs took down the Owls 3-1 in a non-conference match from Dartmouth, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
Kobrenski and Jordan scored within the first 10:30 of the match, then with under eight minutes left in the half, Maddox Canario (Bristol, R.I.) extended the Corsairs lead to three, which is where the score would stand at the half.
In the second half, the Owls sent a flurry of shots towards the net in an effort to climb out of a three-goal deficit. After just two shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Owls piled up 16 shots to the Corsairs four in the back half of the match.
Westfield's first shot on net was off the foot of Tim Tkacz (Suffield, Conn.), labelled to the bottom middle of the net which was stopped by UMass Dartmouth keeper Ethan Donahue (Salem, N.H.). In the 72nd minute, Dylan Wesley (Agawam, Mass.) got the Owls on the board with his second goal of the season. Cairn Bright (Belchertown, Mass.) earned an assist on the marker.
The Owls had two additional scoring chances, a low right-side shot from Nick Parakilas (Broad Brook, Conn.) which was saved by Donahue. With 7:30 to play, Wesley fired another shot towards the frame that was collected by Donahue, ending the comeback effort.
Westfield ended the match with double the shots of UMass Dartmouth (18-9), but the Corsairs were precise in their scoring. Luke Theroux (Chicopee, Mass.) and Marko Kononenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) split time in net for Westfield. Donahue secured the win with three saves.
Westfield State (1-1) will travel to Regis College on Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. before returning home to Alumni Field for their home opener on Saturday at 12:00 P.M. versus Fitchburg State.
