Owls Men Win Five Events, Place Second at MASCAC Championships
Nathan Sylven captured a pair of events for the Owls, winning the 3000 steeplechase and the 5000 meters.
WESTFIELD, Mass. --- The Westfield State men's track and field team took four individual event championships and one relay crown as the team placed second overall at the 2025 MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bridgewater State's Swenson Athletic Complex on Friday, April 25.
Nathan Sylven captured a pair of events for the Owls, winning the 3000 steeplechase early in the meet with a time of 9:48.75, then hitting the tape first in the 5000 meters later in the meet with a time of 15:41.46.
Sylven's two wins accounted for 20 points in the team scoring, with the Owls scoring well in the 5000 as Scott Porter clocked in second and Will Buckley fifth. Buckley added a second-place finish in the 10,000 meter run 33:09
Westfield's Theo Yetman won the 400 meters with a time of 49.20 seconds. Sophomore Ali Warsame won the triple jump with a season best 13.84 meters (45'-5"), and placed third in the long jump with another season best of 6.82 meters (22'-4.5").
Westfield won the 4x800 relay, with the team of Rowan Gottschall, Colin Mahoney, Gordon Johnson and John Nekitopoulos finishing in 8:25.42.
Gottschall was second in the individual 800 meters in a personal best 1:57.67, followed in short order by Nekitopoulos in second and Johnson in third as all three cracked the two-minute mark.
Senior Dylan Clark piled up points for the Owls in the throwing events, placing second in the discus with a toss of 41.78 meters (137'-01"), a personal best by almost three meters for eight points, and added third place finishes in both the shot put (13.85 meters, a personal best) and the hammer throw at 41.48m (136-01").
Host Bridgewater State won the meet with 240 points, followed by the Owls at 172, and Fitchburg State at 131. Worcester State was fourth with 65 points and Mass Maritime fifth at 38.
