WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State softball got off to a fast start in the 2026 season, sweeping a pair of games in Naples, Fla. on Thursday, defeating Rochester Institute of Technology 7-3 in the opener, and La Roche (Pa.) College 5-4 in the night cap.
In the opener, the Owls fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning after an RBI triple from Kate Carlone, but Owls pitchers Joss Mettey and Angelina Vartuli would shut the Tigers out from there.
Westfield tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the first with a 2-run single from Alyssa Slack, then Sarah Hough delivered a 2-run home run to put the Owls on top in the second inning.
Mettey (1-0) tossed four innings to earn the win, while Vartuli worked three scoreless innings for her first save of the season. Hough, Rylie Camacho and Hannah Wodecki each had two hits for the Owls.
In the second game, Ella Malanson slapped an RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh inning to score Reagan Salvatore with what proved to be the game winning run.
Malanson, Hough, Kassidy LaTour and Mia Alfonso each recorded a pair of hits for the Owls.
Isabella Schaeffer (1-0) earned the pitching win in relief.
The Owls continue their Florida trip tomorrow with games against Drew University and SUNY-Potsdam. Live stream video links for the Friday games are available at WestfieldStateOwls.com
