WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State got home runs from Rylie Camacho and Mia Alfonso to power a pair of wins over Drew (NJ) University, 3-2, and SUNY-Potsdam, 7-2 on Friday morning at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
Westfield improved to 4-0 on the season with the two wins.
Camacho smacked a home run to lead off the game against Drew, then singled and scored on Allysa Slack's 2-run single in the third as the Owls took a 3-0 lead.
Drew put together a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to threaten late, scoring one on a double steal and another on a one-out RBI single Gabby Duran, but Duran was caught stealing and Westfield's Joss Mettey retired the final hitter on a fly out to centerfield to end the game.
Angelina Vartuli started and tossed four shutout innings to earn the win. Mettey picked up the save in three innings of work in relief. Drew fell to 6-3 on the season with the loss.
In the second game of the day, Alfonso did the damage early with a home run in the first inning as the Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Alfonso finished 4-4 with five rbi, a double and a home run to fuel the Owls' offense. Hannah Wodecki added three hits and Sarah Hough two.
Shayna Bakun (W, 1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Isabella Schaeffer worked the final three innings allowing one run and striking out four to get the save.
Postdam slipped to 3-5 on the season with the loss.
Westfield will be back in action tomorrow with games against Alfred State (NY) College and The University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 9 and 11 a.m. at North Collier Park in Naples, Fla.
