Owls Toss No Hitter; LaTour Cracks Three Home Runs in Twinbill Sweep

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University first-year pitchers Isabella Schaeffer (South Hadley, Mass.) and Cassidy Wallner (Enfield, Conn.) combined for a no-hitter in the Owls 15-0 win over Alfred State in game 1, and Kassidy LaTour (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) hit a pair of home runs in game 2 as the Owls won a pair of softball games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Naples, Fla. on Saturday morning.
Westfield improves to 6-0 on the season with the two wins. LaTour cracked three home runs in the twinbill, including a grand slam against Alfred.
Schaeffer started game 1 and struck out eight hitters while walking two in four innings of work. Wallner came on to pitch the fifth and walked one and struck out one to close out the game as the Owls won via the eight run rule.
Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Reg.) was 4-5 with a pair of doubles, two rbis and two rbi, with LaTour finishing with two hits and five RBI, including the grand slam in the second that staked the Owls to a 9-0 lead against Pitt-Bradford.
LaTour waved the big stick all day, rapping a solo shot in the first inning, and a two-run blast in the third.
Westfield fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first, but grabbed the lead back for good in the fourth inning on a 2-run double from Wodecki. Wodecki drove in two more with another double in the sixth inning for the final margin of victory.
Wodecki finished 2-3 with four RBI. LaTour was 2-3 with three rbi.
Joss Mettey (W, 2-0) (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Reg.) started and tossed four innings to get the win, Angelina Vartulli (Middletown, Conn.) worked the final three innings to earn her second save of the season. Vartulli has yet to give up an earned run in three appearances spanning 10 innings so far this season.
The Owls are back in action with a single game vs. Lesley University on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
