WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State Softball ran their season-starting streak to nine straight wins as the Owls swept a split doubleheader from Geneva (Pa.) College and Lesley (Mass.) University on Monday morning at North Collier Park in Naples, Fla.
Westfield shutout Geneva, 2-0 in the opener behind a complete-game five hitter from sophomore starting pitcher Angelina Vartuli (Middletown, Conn.). Vartuli (W, 2-0) posted the complete game while allowing three walks and striking out five.
Westfield scrapped together two runs in the first two innings off Golden Tornadoes (8-3) starter McKenzie Rapp (L, 3-1) who allowed eight hits and just one earned run in a complete game performance.
In the top of the first inning, Sarah Hough (Southwick, Mass.) doubled, and scored one hitter later when Mia Alfonso (Dalton, Mass./Pittsfield) singled Hough home.
In the second inning, Allyssa Slack led off with a single for the Owls, and moved to second on Caroline O'Donnell's (Quincy, Mass.) base hit. Arielle Ostman (Woodbury, Minn.) bunted the runners to second and third, and Slack scored an unearned run for the Owls when Rylie Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) reached on an error.
That proved to be all the offense Vartuli would need, as she has now worked 17 innings over four games without allowing an earned run.
In the nightcap, Westfield broke out the bats in slugging their way to a 15-0 win over Lesley (0-3).
Five Owls players recorded a pair of hits before the game ended early via the eight-run rule.
Eva Surrette (Braintree, Mass.) drove in three runs, while Ella Malanson (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire) tripled and drove in two.
Cassidy Wallner (W, 1-0) (Enfield, Conn.) started and tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Lyla Dwyer (Hopewell Jct., NY/John Jay) worked two scoreless in relief.
Westfield is now 9-0 on the season.
Westfield will play a b squad exhibition game against St. Thomas tomorrow at noon at North Collier Park, before facing St. Joseph's University (of Brooklyn, NY) in a varsity game at 2:00 p.m.
