Vartuli and Schaeffer Earn MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State pitchers Angelina Vartuli, a sophomore from Middletown, Conn., and Isabella Schaeffer, a first-year student from South Hadley, Mass., were highlighted as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference's softball pitcher of the week and rookie of the week for the week ending March 22.
Vartuli tossed a five-hit shutout in the Owls 2-0 win over Geneva (Pa.) College. She allowed three walks and struck out five in the win. Vartuli has a 2-0 record with two saves. In 17 innings over four appearances this season she has yet to allow an earned run.

Schaeffer walked one and struck out three in the win. She was part of a second-straight no-hit effort by the Owls, as she started and tossed four no-hit innings against Alfred State in her previous start, which ended as a combined (five inning) no hitter with fellow first-year Cassidy Wallner.
Schaeffer has recorded a 0.47 ERA through 15 innings and four appearances this season, where she is 3-0 with one save.
Schaeffer and Vartuli have helped the Owls to a 12-0 start this season in their opening week of games in Naples, Fla. Westfield starts the northern portion of their schedule on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
