WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University softball extended their season-opening winning streak to 14 games with a sweep of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Wednesday afternoon.
Westfield won game 1 by a 10-6 count, then invoked the 8-run rule with a 15-2 victory in game 2.
In game 1, Westfield broke open a close game with a six-run sixth inning. Caroline O'Donnell registered three hits in the game, with Sarah Hough and Hannah Wodecki each recording a pair of hits, including a pair of 2-run doubles in the big sixth inning.
Allyssa Slack got the Owls' offense started with a 2-run homer in the second inning.
Joss Mettey started and earned the win in the circle, while Isabella Schaeffer worked the final three innings for her second save of the season.
In game 2, Westfield exploded for nine runs in the third inning, including a grand slam home run from Hough.
The Owls hit three home runs in the game, with Mia Alfonso launching a 2-run shot in the first inning, and Slack contributing a leadoff home run in the second.
Wodecki and Alfonso had three hits each.
Hough, Wodecki and Alfonso continue to rewrite the Owls record book, rapping out five doubles between them in the doubleheader. The trio have taken over the top three spots in the Owls career records, with Hough currently leading the race with 38 doubles, with Alfonso (36) and Wodecki (34) in close pursuit.
