WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University softball swept a doubleheader from Worcester State, with the Owls starting the season 16-0 to set a school-record for the longest winning streak in Owls softball history.
The Owls took game 1 by a 10-1 score behind starter Joss Mettey (W, 5-0) to win their 15th straight game, breaking a record set in the 1975 season when coach Ken Magarian's Owls won 14 straight after losing their season-opener, before falling to Brown University on the way to an 18-2 season.
Westfield won game 2 by a 4-1 final behind a complete game from starting pitcher Angelina Vartuli (W, 4-0).
Westfield is now 16-0, 2-0 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, while Worcester State dips to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
In the opener, Kassidy LaTour finished 4-4 with a double and two runs batted in. She got the scoring started in the second inning, reach on a single and coming around to score on a misplay on Caroline O'Donnell's base hit to center field. Latour's two RBI double in the sixth inning invoked the run rule for the 10-1 win.
Sarah Hough had a pair of hits and scored two runs, and O'Donnell finished 2-3 with a double and two RBI.
Mettey tossed a complete game four-hitter, striking out four. Westfield got a pair of defensive web gems, including a diving catch in the alley from centerfielder Arielle Ostman in the third inning, and a sliding stop up the middle from Rylie Camacho in the fourth to keep the leadoff hitter off base.
Worcester starter Peyton Maloney (L, 3-4) took the pitching loss, yielding nine hits and five earned runs in 4-1/3 innings. Camden Heenan was the lone repeat hitter for the Lancers.
In the nightcap, Westfield broke open a tight game with a three run sixth inning.
Hannah Wodecki singled and eventually scored on LaTour's 2-run double.
Sarah Hough made a diving catch on a blooper over third base in the seventh inning to help end the Lancer threat late.
Vartuli allowed eight hits but just the one run in the fifth when the Lancers strung together three bunt singles in the inning, including a squeeze to score Bailey Tammaro on Amanda Adamuska's squeeze bunt. Vartuli struck out six and walked just one.
Starter Taylor Stuart (L, 0-4) took the loss, allowing six hits and four runs, but just one earned run, walking none and striking out 1. Adamuska and Westfield native Emma LaPoint each finished with two hits for the Lancers.
