Vartuli, Hough Earn MASCAC Laurels
Owls earn Pitcher, Player of the Week Awards
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University softball added a couple more accolades today, as senior SS Sarah Hough (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland HS) was named the league's player of the week, and sophomore pitcher Angelina Vartuli (Middletown, Conn.) was selected as the league's pitcher of the week for the week ending April 19, 2026.
Hough batted .400 (8-20) in a 5-1 week, getting at least one hit in each game, with three home runs, two doubles, four walks, nine RBI, seven runs scored and .950 slugging percentage. She hit a go-ahead homer in the 6-1 win over Framingham State.
She finished 3-for-6 with a double, home run, three runs scored and RBI in the doubleheader sweep of WNE, and was 3-for-7 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader sweep of MCLA.
Hough set the school's career hit record in the win over Framingham and entered the new week with 168 career hits.
In 27 games played this season, she's batting .406 with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 39 runs batted in.
Vartuli improved to 10-0 on the season, posting a 4-0 record over 22 innings pitched with a 0.63 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and three walks. She spun a compete game four-hitter in a 7-1 win at MCLA, then came back to pitch in four games in three days, earning the win in relief in both halves of the doubleheader sweep of WNE that extended the Owls winning streak to 26 straight games to open the season. Came in to quash a rally in the game one setback to Framingham State, then worked a gritty seven innings in game 2, allowing six hits and one run in the 6-1 win over the Rams.
Vartuli has a 0.83 earned-run average for the season. In 67-1/3 innings she has allowed just 55 hits and struck out 57 batters
Westfield State has a 29-1 record this season. The Owls are currently ranked 10th in the nation in NCAA Division III's NPI power rankings. Westfield will host Wesleyan (Conn.) in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
