Softball Sweeps Bridgewater, Owls Hold on To First Place in MASCAC

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State softball improved to 31-1 on the season and 13-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference by sweeping Bridgewater State University, 4-2 in 8 innings and 4-3.
Westfield, ranked 10th in the nation in the most recent NCAA NPI computer rankings, holds on to first place in the conference, one game ahead of Salem State.
In the opener, Westfield trailed 1-0 through four innings before Sarah Hough ripped a 2-run home run (her eighth of the season) to center field to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
Bridgewater tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a rbi sacrifice fly, and the game went to extra innings tied at 2-2.
Westfield got RBI singles from Mia Alfonso and Kassidy LaTour in the top of the eighth inning, and starter Joss Mettey (W, 10-1) closed the door in the bottom half of the inning for the win. Mettey tossed a complete game, allowing just one earned run, walking none and striking out three to get her 10th win.
In the nightcap, Westfield's Angelina Vartuli (12-0) tossed a complete game for her 12th win of the season. Vartuli allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out four, and worked around trouble in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Mia Alfonso had a single and a double and drove in a run, Rylie Camacho rapped out two hits and scored a run.
Bridgewater is now 15-19, 6-8 in the conference.
