Softball Clinches Regular Season Crown; Sweeps Through Salem
Westfield State softball won their third straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title with a doubleheader sweep at Salem State University on Saturday. Westfield won game one 7-4, and game two by a 7-5 final score.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State softball won their third straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title with a doubleheader sweep at Salem State University on Saturday. Westfield won game one 7-4, and game two by a 7-5 final score.
With the win in game 1, Westfield clinched the top seed in next week's conference tournament. The Owls will host a quarterfinal round game in the double-elimination tournament on Thursday, May 7 at 3:30 p.m., then host the semifinal and championship rounds on the 8th and 9th at Sullivan Field. Final seedings will be announced following the conclusion of league play today.
Westfield, ranked 11th in the NCAA NPI rankings, and 24th in the NFCA coaches' poll, improved to 35-1 on the season, and wrapped up conference play with a 15-1 record. Salem, which had a shot to unseat the Owls with a pair of wins today, finishes 27-12 and 13-3 in the MASCAC.
Westfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opener before holding on late. Westfield scored a pair of runs in the top of the first with the benefit of just one hit, a double by Sarah Hough, sandwiched between a walk, and error and a pair of RBI fielder's choice plays.
Caroline O'Donnell and Hough added rbi singles and the third and the fifth to help build the big lead.
Westfield starter Joss Mettey (W, 11-1) held Salem scoreless into the sixth inning before giving up four hits, including a 3-run home run from Ellie Kleinheinz that trimmed the lead back to 7-4. Angelina Vartuli came on to work a scoreless seventh inning to get the save.
Hough, O'Donnell and Hannah Wodecki each had a pair of hits for the Owls. Salem State starter Charlie Benesh(L, 11-3) tossed a complete game in the loss.
The nightcap followed the same script with the Owls getting out to a 6-0 lead through the top of the third inning. Hough launched a two-run home run in the first inning after Rylie Camacho walked to open the game. The homer was Hough's ninth of the season, tying the school's single season record set by Wodecki in 2024.
Wodecki added a solo home run in the third, and Lyla Dwyer a 2-run single to build the lead.
Salem got to Owls's starter Shayna Bakun in the third, pushing across five runs, with Isabella Shaeffer coming in to get the final three outs of the inning a quell the rally.
Dywer delivered an RBI single in the fifth to give the Owls an insurance run, and Shaeffer (W, 6-0) kept the Vikings off the scoreboard with five innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Dwyer finished the game 3-4 with three rbi, Camacho and Allyssa Slack each had two hits.
Alanis Toledano (L, 5-5) went two innings in taking the pitching loss for the Vikings.
Westfield has now won nine straight games since enduring their lone blemish on the 2026 season.
