Lancers Joust Owls Late, 76-59
Westfield dips to 13-7 and 5-4 in the league, in a three-way tie for third in the league
WESTFIELD., Mass. – Worcester State erupted for 46 second-half points as the Lancers saw all five starters score in double-figures in a 76-59 win over the Owls in a MASCAC women's basketball game at the Brissette Court in Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday night.
Westfield dips to 13-7 and 5-4 in the league, in a three-way tie for third in the league with Worcester (8-12 overall, 5-4 MASCAC) and Salem State.
The Lancers were led by 17 points from Lena Waldron, and got 10 points and 21 rebounds from Alana Smith. Mia Haynes added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Lancers.
Westfield was led by a career-best 14 points from Sophia DeAngelis, and got a double-double from Tavi Williams with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Westfield jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the early going, but Worcester State battled back, trimming the Owls lead to just 32-30 at the half on a steal by Hannah Lomanaco and a layup from Haynes at the buzzer.
Worcester led 48-46 after the Owls' Caroline Galvani scored a layup with 2:32 left in the third quarter, but from there the Lancers went on 14-0 run over the next seven and a half minutes. Westfield missed 17 straight shots from the floor and were 1-6 from the foul line in the critical stretch as the run extended to 18-1 as the Lancers led 66-47 with 3:33 left to play.
Westfield shot just 26.7 percent from the floor (20-75) in the game and was out-rebounded 62-37.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, hosting MCLA at noon at the Woodward Center.
