Westfield State got big efforts off the bench from Caroline Galvani and Jailyn Garvin-Martin as the Owls held off Salem State, 58-56 to clinch the third seed in the MASCAC Tournament.

WESTFIELD., Mass. – Westfield State women's basketball got big efforts off the bench from Caroline Galvani and Jailyn Garvin-Martin as the Owls held off Salem State, 58-56 in a MASCAC women's basketball game at the Woodward Center on Wednesday night.
Galvani tossed in 14 points with four three-pointers, and Garvin-Martin netted 13 points and snagged six steals to lead the Owls defensive unit, which forced 43 turnovers on the evening.
Westfield improves to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in the league, while Salem slips to 11-13 overall and 7-6 in the league. The Owls clinched the number three seed in next week's MASCAC tournament with tonight's win.
Westfield led 34-33 at the half. Salem took a 52-49 lead into the third quarter, but the Owls held the Vikings scoreless for the first 7:17 of the fourth quarter. Westfield led 58-52 after Galvani's three pointer with 3:01 left in regulation. After a timeout, Salem answered with Amayah McConney's jumper to trim the lead back to four.
Salem got the lead down to two points on a pair of free thros from Kylie Schrock with 1:45 left but could get no closer.
Schrock led Salem with 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Maria Orfanos added 11 and eight rebounds, and Ernidia Goncalves posted 10 points and 16 boards.
Westfield got eight points, nine rebounds and four steals from Tavi Williams. Morgan Berthiaume added eight, and Gianna Strange netted seven points and five rebounds for the Owls.
Westfield will host the final regular-season game on Saturday, hosting Fitchburg at 12 noon, which will be the Owls senior day. Westfield will host a first-round MASCAC Tournament game on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined after this weekend's games.
