Owls Soar Past ECSU, 17-10

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Mercedes Rozzi (S. Burlington, Vt.) and Christina Roncarati (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored four goals to help power Westfield State women's lacrosse to a 17-10 win over Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference game at Alumni Field on Tuesday evening.
Westfield State improves to 4-5 on the season with the win, while Eastern slips to 2-5.
The Owls jumped out to a 5-1 lead late in the first period and never trailed in the game.
Eastern trimmed the lead to three on two occasions , the last at 7-4 when Alexa Vizzini (Vernon, NJ) fed Hannah Seltzer (Colchester, Conn.) for the goal on the right side of fan, but that was as close as the Warriors could get.
Roncarati capped the first-half scoring with a drive from the top of the fan with 41 seconds left in the half to give Westfield an 8-4 lead at the break. Westfield scored three straight to open the second half, with Roncarati feeding from the top of the fan to Marena Morales (Tolland, Conn.), who finalized with a ¾ rip to the back of the net. Morales tallied 13 seconds later after securing the draw control and going straight to the goal to put Westfield up 10-4 with 12:19 left in the third. Bri McPhilips (Montgomery, NY) completed the scoring run for the Owls at 8:18 of the third, finding the back of the net off of a pass from Ariana Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, NY).
Westfield's final goal of the night came from first-year attack Brooke Oliveri (Somers, Conn.) rolling the crease on the right side for her first collegiate goal, that made it 17-9 with 2:01 left in regulation.
Seltzer tallied with three seconds left for the Warriors for the final margin.
Roncarati finished with four goals and three assists, Rozzi had four goals and an assist, and Morales netted three and an assist to lead the Owls. Izzy Conley (N. Salem, N.Y.) made 15 saves in net.
For Eastern Connecticut, Seltzer tallied four goals, Ella Huard (Southington, Conn.) and Jocelyn Kennedy (Southington, Conn.) had two each, and Vizzini netted a goal and three assists. Savannah Goodness (New Fairfield, Conn.) made five saves.
Shots were nearly even with Eastern leading 35-34, while Westfield held a 16-13 advantage in draw controls.
Westfield will be back in conference play on Friday night at Mass Maritime Academy.
