WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior goalkeeper Izzy Conley (North Salem, N.Y.) made 14 saves but the Owls fell to fifth-ranked Amherst College 19-5 in non-conference action from Gooding Field in Amherst, Mass. on Tuesday.
The Owls wrap up a gauntlet of a non-conference slate, facing their third ranked opponent of the season while facing four teams within the current IWLCA top 25 coaches poll.
Sophomore attacker Marena Morales (Tolland, Conn.) scored three goals, added five draw controls, and has now recorded multi-goal efforts in six of her last seven games. She is currently second in the conference with 33 goals scored, trailing only teammate Christina Roncarati (East Longmeadow, Mass.).
Mercedes Rozzi (South Burlington, Vt.) and Kara Racicot (Westfield, Mass.) both registered second half goals.
Gabby Sosa, Clara Sosa, and Bridget Finley all scored three times for the Mammoths which improved to 12-1 on the season.
Amherst scored the opening five goals of the game in an eight-minute span with Finley and Bridget Darcy scoring twice in that burst. Morales scored the final two goals of the period to trim the deficit to three goals, but the Mammoths tallied eight unanswered goals including seven in the second quarter to put the game away.
Westfield State (6-7, 3-0 MASCAC) will play two conference games over the next three days, starting tomorrow with the Owls visiting Anna Maria at 6:00 P.M., then remain on the road Friday at Salem State for a 7:00 P.M. first draw.
