WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior Emily Washkalavitch (Oxford, Pa.) delivered a complete performance for Westfield State with 17 kills, ten digs, and four aces as the Owls secured their fifth straight win of the season against Fitchburg State in the MASCAC opener on the road Wednesday night.
The Owls are now 6-7 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. The Falcons are now 0-11 and 0-1 in the MASCAC.
Washkalavitch led Westfield in kills and tied Allie Hill (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) for the team lead with four aces on a night where the Owls racked up 17 aces as a unit which is a season high.
Morgan Dority (Walpole, Mass.) had 33 of the Owls 40 assists and Erica Majka (Agawam, Mass.) reached 20 digs, marking the third time in the last four matches she has recorded 20-plus digs. Six different Owls posted ten or more digs, highlighting the depth in a strong return game for Westfield.
After a modest .200 hitting percentage in set one, the Owls bottomed out at a .049 hitting percentage in a set two loss before responding resoundingly with percentages of .269 and a blistering .500 in a dominant 25-6 set four win to seal the match victory.
Westfield State will ride the five-game winning streak into Saturday's clash against Bridgewater State, a rematch of last year's MASCAC Championship match, at home from the Woodward Center at 11:00 A.M.
