Owls Blast Gordon, 10-0 To Open Season
Westfield State got three goals from Kaleigh Murphy as the Owls powered to a 10-0 win over Gordon College in the Owls season-opener in the first round of the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith College on Friday afternoon.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Westfield State got three goals from Kaleigh Murphy as the Owls powered to a 10-0 win over Gordon College in the Owls season-opener in the first round of the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith College on Friday afternoon.
Westfield State (1-0) will face host Smith in the championship game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., while Gordon (0-1) will face UMaine Farmington in the consolation final at 12 noon. Smith topped UMF 7-0 in the other first round game today.
Westfield scored four times in the first eight minutes to establish a lead they would never surrender.
Eliana Kaplan got the Owls on the board first in the fourth minute of play, scoring on a blast from just inside the top of the circle. Murphy tallied her first of the day less than a minute later as she scored from the middle of the circle. Murphy added her second of the day a minute and a half later to extend the lead to 3-0. Grad transfer Jayonna Montigny attacked the goal to add the Owls' fourth goal of the day at the 8:30 mark.
Murphy finished with three goals, running her career total to 27 goals and 11 assists for 65 points. She moves into 10th on the Owls all-time points list, moving up three spots with the big day today.
Montigny and Ashley D'Elia added two goals each for the Owls. Kacey Curran netted her first collegiate goal late in the game.
The Owls outshot the Fighting Scots 30-1 on the afternoon, with Westfield limiting the Scots to just a few incursions into the defensive half of the field. Olivia Labrie needed just one save to earn the shutout. Gordon got 16 saves from goalkeeper Allyson Stauffer.
Westfield out-cornered the Scots 9-3.
