WESTFIELD., Mass. – Fitchburg State got a goal and an assist each from Marcus Macchioni and Nicklas Millhorn as the Falcons topped Westfield State, 4-1 in a battle at the top of the MASCAC men's ice hockey standings at Amelia Park on Thursday evening.
After a scoreless first period, the Falcons broke the game open with three goals in a 10 minute span in the second period.
Macchioni got the Falcons on the board after some tic tac toe passing with assists to Tristan Skaggs and Jackson Collins.
The Falcons tallied on the power play with Hunter Dunn burying the goal, then Declan Bronte scored after John Mantone won won the puck battle at the blueline and rushed it up the ice.
Millhorn added a power play goal with 6:01 left in the game on a nice give and go at the Owls blueline with Macchion picking up the assist.
Westfield State's Colin Roe finally broke through with a power play goal with 3:22 left in regulation on a centering pass from Raphael Seguin.
Fitchburg State 's Frederick Soderburg made 35 saves, while Westfield State's Aidan Winslow stopped 29 shots.
Fitchburg stays in first place in the league standings with 18 points, one ahead of Anna Maria, while the Owls sit third with 13 points.
