Hebert Tallies Equalizer Late, Owls Tie Mass. Maritime 1-1
Hebert scored the game-tying goal with 9:32 remaining in the match to secure the draw on the road Friday night.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior Carter Hebert (Easthampton, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 9:32 remaining in the match as the Owls secured a 1-1 draw against Mass. Maritime Academy in a MASCAC contest from Buzzards Bay, Mass. on Friday night.
The Owls stand at 5-2-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the conference while the Buccaneers move to 5-4-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in the MASCAC.
Westfield trailed by a goal for most of the contest after Brody Calvert (Windsor, Mass.) converted the game's first goal 5:12 into the match. The Owls second half push was fueled by a 14-5 shot margin, with Hebert breaking through after a series of effective passes.
Sonny Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) launched a ball from about 40 yards out into the box, bouncing around before finding Carter Daughdrill (Easthampton, Mass.) who chipped the ball back into the center of the box. The ball found Ethan Margolis (Wakefield, Mass.) who headed the ball over a pair of defenders, setting up Hebert in a race to the ball against Buccaneers goalkeeper Preston Joia (Mashpee, Mass.) who was charging out of his net. Hebert got to the ball first, tapping the ball over a sliding Joia to tie the match.
The Owls had several additional scoring chances throughout the match, including three corner kicks in a span of five minutes midway through the second half. The second corner resulted in a ball sent towards the back of the box off the head of Charlie Anischik (South Hadley, Mass.) with the ball labeled for the top of the net before Joia pushed the ball above the crossbar to keep the Bucs ahead.
Anischik had another look at the ensuing corner kick but was too tight towards the far post resulting in a save from Joia.
In the first half, one of the top chances for Westfield came off a free kick from Tim Tkacz (Suffield, Conn.) with his shot from the 15-yard line nearly clipping the top righthand corner of the bar, sitting on top of the net as it sailed just out of play.
Calvert split a pair of Owls defenders and possessed the ball at the top of the penalty area, rocketing a shot past Luke Theroux (Chicopee, Mass.) for his eighth goal of the season to give the Bucs a one-goal lead. Calvert had an opportunity in the closing seconds of the match, heading a shot towards the goal which was saved by Theroux as the final scoring chance for either side.
Theroux made four saves for the Owls while Joia made five stops for the Buccaneers. Westfield outshot Mass. Maritime 20-11.
Westfield State will face Salve Regina in their next match which is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:00 P.M. from Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass.
