Owls Sink Maritime, 3-0

WESTFIELD, Mass.  --     Westfield State's Tia Tollis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored less than two minutes into the match to lead a trio of Owl goal scorers as Westfield State blanked Massachusetts Maritime Academy 3-0  in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Alumni Field on Friday night.

Westfield State's Julia Robak (Chicopee, Mass.) needed just one save in goal to post the shutout.

Westfield improves to 3-4-4 and stays unbeaten in the league at 3-0-1.   Mass Maritime is now 0-11 overall and 0-5 in the MASCAC.

Tollis ran on to a ball deflected to the top of the goalkeepers box and poked it past MMA netminder Brady Deschamps (Brewster, Mass./Nauset) to grab a 1-0 lead.

Westfield doubled that lead in the 23^rd minute, as Morgan Berthiaume (Webster, Mass./Douglas) fed Avery Placzek (Chicopee, Mass.) with a through ball near the penalty spot and Placzek directed a shot inside the far post for her first goal of the season.

The Owls added a third goal in the 58^th minute, with Leah Burchman (Griswold, Conn./ Norwich Free) scoring the first of her career off of a through ball from Kylie Tomassetti (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin).

Westfield peppered the Buccaneers with 46 total shots, and MMA got 22 saves from Deschamps to keep the match close.  Robak's lone save came late in the first half on a shot from the Bucs' Ayla Santoro (Attleboro, Mass.).

Westfield will complete a three-game homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 7, hosting Castleton State in a non-conference match that starts at 7:00 p.m.

The Buccaneers will be idle until next Saturday when they travel to Bay Path for a 7:00 p.m. kick.
