WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Julia Robak (Chicopee, Mass.) made 12 saves for Westfield State which put forth a valiant effort against #12 Middlebury College in an NCAA Tournament first round match, falling in a 3-0 decision from Middlebury, Vt. on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls season comes to an end, but not after another successful campaign, winning a fourth MASCAC Championship in the last five seasons, recording a 9-6-6 overall record.
The Owls suffered an early marker from the Panthers about 15 minutes into the match after Mari Rode bended an attempt from 20 yards out into the upper lefthand corner of the goal frame to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Westfield held Middlebury off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half and were under 30 seconds away from trailing by one heading into the break before Olivia Colby got to a pass deep in the penalty area, making a move around an Owls defender before tucking a shot into the lower corner of the net, doubling their advantage 34 seconds before halftime.
Senior midfielder Morgan Berthiaume (Webster, Mass.) aimed to cut into the Middlebury lead at the 61:41 mark, stepping to the edge of the box and dialing up a shot that was blocked and cleared out of danger.
The Panthers found a third goal in the second half with Rode dishing a pass to Suzanna Fee in the 65th minute to secure the win for the Panthers, who advanced into the second round to take on #15 Rochester who defeated Hartford 2-0 in the second match of the day.
Robak denied an excellent Panther chance with 10:10 left in the bout. Mia Feldman raced down the right side and guided a try to the upper-right corner, but the goalie extended her left glove on a dive to quell the opportunity.
Middlebury held a 37-3 shots advantage with Kylie Tomasetti (Northborough, Mass.) tallying the lone shot on goal for the Owls which was saved by NESCAC All-Conference keeper Livia Davidson.
Today's tournament meeting was the first ever women's soccer match between the two sides.
