WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University volleyball dropped a non-conference match at the US Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday evening, falling by scores of 25-15, 25-19. 25-22.
Westfield slips to 0-4 on the young season while Coast Guard is now 2-2.
The Owls were led by a trio of players with seven kills each – Emma and Hannah Nihill (Chandler, Az./Basha) and Sydney Cummins (Nicholasville, Ky./East Jessamine).
Julia Dangel-Garcia (Ashland, Mass.) set a team-high 13 assists, Chloe Schuld (Sycamore, Ill.) led with 14 digs. Hannah Nihill and Julia Bartiet (Cheshire, Conn.) each contributed four blocks.
Coast Guard raced out to an 8-1 lead in the first set and largely controlled the first two sets. Westfield offered more resistance in the third set, battling to 15-all after a kill from Cummins, but the Bears edged away from the Owls late.
Carlee Lingle led Coast Guard with 11 kills.
Westfield will next host Rhode Island College on Saturday in an 11 am match at the Woodward Center.
