WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State first-year Sydney Cummins (Nicholasville, Ky.) earned conference honors once again this past week as she was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for her performance in the Owls key league victory over Bridgewater State.
Cummins led the Owls with a game-tying 15 kills and added 15 digs and three block assists as Westfield held off the Bears by winning in five sets to remain unbeaten in the MASCAC (the two teams entered the contest both without a loss in league play).
Cummins, who received the conference's Rookie of the Week honors for a fifth time this season, leads the Owls with 182 kills as a rookie, which is currently fourth in the MASCAC overall. Her 2.46 kills per set are also the fourth-most in the league.
The first-year outside hitter has also shown versatility in her defensive play as well as Cummins is second on the team with 184 digs.
Two of the Owls four wins in the conference came against last season's 2023 MASCAC Championship finalists: MCLA and Framingham State by a combined set score of 6-1. Westfield also secured wins over Salem State and Bridgewater to put themselves in position for a MASCAC regular season title.
Westfield State is currently holding down the top spot in the MASCAC standings as the Owls are 4-0 in the league with three conference matches remaining, tonight against Mass. Maritime, Friday versus Worcester State, and next Saturday against Fitchburg State. The Owls also have a non-conference date with Plymouth State at home as all four remaining games for Westfield are at home from the Woodward Center in Westfield, Mass.
The Owls and Buccaneers meet tonight at 7:00 P.M. for a conference tilt from the Woodward Center in Westfield, Mass.
